OK, like many VW owners I bought mine without deep knowledge of the many subtle differences year to year.
The major discrepancy I missed were the rear fenders, they were from a 1973 with the elephant foot taillights. They look fine and all, just wrong year. My goal now after 17 years of ownership is to get it back to 1970 condition.
Luckily finding good used ones was pretty simple and found them on Craigslist nearby for $25 each. They just needed to be stripped and a few minor cosmetic issues cleared up.
The paint came off easy, it was original factory green with what looks like a green respray somewhere along the way and apparently the original dealership undercoat applied. Interestingly under the undercoating is where I discovered the most [minor] surface oxidation.
Getting all of the old undercoating off has been the biggest hassle but certainly not super difficult.
I just want to get back down to bare, good metal before priming and paint.
Total time per fender will be about 4 hours before ready for priming.
Plans to finish up…
After I get all of the old undercoat off, next phase will be wire brush and sand the oxidation down then scrub the fenders with Scotchbrite® pads and phosphoric acid to kill rust.
Once I am satisfied I have gone as far as I’m going to go, I will paint over the underside and attach flanges with POR-15, then prime and shoot a final coat of red.
